Documents received by the Provincial Secretary for Canada West 1841-1867, together with some files of 1821-1841 brought forward for reference, were entered in a numbered registry system. The numeric sequence was begun anew each year. Even when the documents have not survived within this series, the corresponding Registers in which was recorded details about each file offer a wealth of information not merely about a specific question but also about government operations generally, and the essential clues for tracing documents referred to other offices.

Registers and indexes are available on reels C-10801 to C-10809. The numbered correspondence files are available on microfilm as follows: for the years 1821 to 1844, reels C-13550 to C-13573 and C-15723 to C-15757; for the years 1844 to 1867, reels H-2350 to H-2517. Reports and accounts are available on reels H-2517 and H-2518.
