Additional MSS. 4164 is Volume 5 of a 5-volume collection of copies of letters relating chiefly to affairs of state. The excerpt copied by the National Archives of Canada, in 1915, is document No. 12 of the volume. It is a letter in the form of an irregularly kept journal, 3 June 1754 - 30 September 1755, to Spilman (Spelman), Esq., from Lieutenant William Jacobs (fl. 1741-1755), serving in H.M.S. Success under Captain John Rous (d. 1760). It contains descriptions of Halifax, Lunenburg, Annapolis, Saint John, and Boston, as well as an account of the 1755 expedition against Fort Beauséjour, and mentions the bad relations between the British regular soldiers and the New England volunteers.
