Within each sub-series arrangement is alphabetical.

While file titles have been slightly rationalized within each sub-series, no effort was made to ensure that subject files in one section were assigned identical or even similar titles in another. For researchers, this approach means that while they will benefit from the evidential information afforded by documents in original order, they can also expect to encounter numerous anomalies and inconsistencies when consulting the series in its entirety. The sub-series themselves are in roughly chronological order.

Originals, located at the Diefenbaker Canada Centre, University of Saskatchewan, are arranged in volumes 1 to 128. At Library and Archives Canada (LAC), microfilm reel numbers M-9375 to M-9431 correspond to volumes 1 to 125. LAC's volumes 126 to 128 contain photocopies of the originals.

Researchers utilizing the Personal and Confidential series will also find important material relating to the 1957-1979 period in six other Diefenbaker series: VI PMO Series - Numbered Correspondence; VII Reference Series 1957-1967; VIII PMO Series - Unnumbered Correspondence; IX Second Leader of the Opposition 1963-1967 Series; X Office Administration; and XI Member of Parliament 1967-1979 series. For the most part, Diefenbaker's VIP and personal correspondence is found in the 1967-1979 Member of Parliament Series.
