George Anson, Baron Anson (1697-1762) was born, 23 April 1697, at Shugborough, Staffordshire. He was the second son of William Anson by his wife Isabella, daughter of Charles Carrier of Wirkworth, Derbyshire. He began his career in the navy as a volunteer on board the Ruby on 2 February 1712. In 1740, he was appointed to the command of the Pacific squadron which, having sailed around the world, returned to England in 1744 with rich prizes. He became a rear-admiral, 1745, and vice-admiral of the Channel fleet, 1746. After his victory over the French off Finisterre in 1747, Anson was raised to the peerage. In the following year he married Lady Elizabeth Yorke, daughter of the Lord Chancellor. He served as first lord of the admiralty, 1751-1756 and 1757-1762. He became admiral of the fleet in 1761 and died, without issue, on 6 June 1762.

Additional Manuscripts 15955-15957, which are part of the William Upcott Collection purchased by the British Library in 1846, contain the original private and official correspondence of Admiral George, Lord Anson, 1744-1762, arranged alphabetically in three volumes. In 1931, the National Archives of Canada transcribed selections from them. Add. MSS. 15903, ff. 116-118v
