Interview with M. Bottrill about his experiences with the 4th Canadian Infantry Battalion during World War I.~He talks about the battle for Hill 70 near Lens where the 4th Batalion relieved the 10th Battalion to defend against attacks by the enemy to retake their trenches.~Bottrill provides a detailed account of the preparations and actions at the battle of Passchendaele and the Divisional Commander, Brigadier-General Archibald "Archie" Macdonnell, the "greatest builder of morale" who stood on a farm wagon "knee deep in manure" and prepared the men for the upcoming battle. Bottrill talks about advancing among the heavy guns dubbed "elephant guns" and scrambling to find shelter from enemy strafing. Stumbling into a German pillbox, he relates his horror upon discovering that everyone from the 3rd Battalion was dead and the "bodies all jumbled up." He also recalls finding shelter with other Canadian scouts among the ruins of [Graf] farm. There they shared a food parcel from home and heated water in their makeshift "tommy cookers."~In conclusion, Bottrill recounts that the battalion relieved the beleaguered British troops and found them "half dead." Only 29 British troops survived from a company of 150 men who had "gone the limit."
