A profile of Louis St. Laurent, Prime Minister of Canada from 1948-1957. This documentary employs stills, archival footage, and narrative interspersed with segments of an interview with the retired St. Laurent. His roots in a bilingual, bicultural home and his legal background are noted as a fitting prelude to his entry into politics at age 59. During interview segments, St. Laurent recalls his reluctance to enter politics and his reasons for remaining so long. His contributions are highlighted through footage of: news headlines about the conscription issue; Prime Minister Nehru of India, with whom he developed a close friendship; a ceremony to admit Newfoundland into the Dominion of Canada; Vincent Massey, the first Canadian-born Governor General of Canada, appointed by St. Laurent; and St. Laurent speaking about the need for international cooperation. Additional noteworthy footage includes: St. Laurent announcing his appointment as Prime Minister on November 15, 1948; admirers greeting him at a railway station in Jasper, Alberta; his reception in B.C. during the election campaign of 1949; St. Laurent on his successful 1954 world tour, a serious drain on his health; John Diefenbaker campaigning in 1957, which resulted in a victory by the Progressive Conservatives; and several politicians, including Diefenbaker, paying tribute to St. Laurent.
