Series consists of selected correspondence and papers relating chiefly to the period 1841-1845 when Lord Derby was colonial secretary, including departmental memoranda, 1841-1845; cabinet memoranda, 1841-1845; private and confidential correspondence with Sir Charles Bagot, 1841-1843 and with Charles Metcalfe, 1842-1845; and miscellaneous letters and memoranda, 1842-1853.

Series also consists of four letters concerning Canada, transcript, 1866-1867, 3 pages, copied from the correspondence of the fifteenth Earl of Derby were included in this collection at the time of filming.

Transcripts of the Metcalfe correspondence, 1842-1845, received in 1925.
