Unedited interview of John Bracken former Premier of Manitoba and former leader of the federal Progressive Conservative Party. It takes place outdoors, in a garden, near a house, with scenes of a farm and horses in background in some shots. Some scenes show Bracken in field with horses and ponies. Can 8614-2312 consists of audio of Scene 1, take 1, and Scene 2, take 1. In Scene 1, take 1, John Bracken speaks about: life in Eastern Ontario; his boyhood ambition to be a farmer; attending Brockville High School; playing hockey rather than studying at school; attending Guelph Agricultural College; his approach to government; unfair pay for farmers; the respect he felt when he was a boy for Members of Parliament; the death of Sir John A. Macdonald; his job in Manitoba and Saskatchewan as Superintendent of Fairs and the Farmer's Institute and Secretary of the Livestock Association; excursions in Saskatchewan; the rural population; the quality of land; marginal farm land; farm failures because of the poor land; the state of farm production in 1906; the control of wheat prices; and foreign markets. In Scene 2, take 1, he speaks about: raising horses and Shetland ponies; dairy cattle; the United Farmers movements after the First World War; farm credit; farm loans; how he became Premier of Manitoba; why he took the job as premier; his views on voting; organizing his ministers; and obtaining a seat in the legislature. Can 8614-2314, Scene 3, take 1, consists of audio of Bracken speaking about: his being elected in the riding of The Pas in Northern Manitoba; Horace [Halcrow], the mayor of The Pas; the election there; the mayor turning down a bribe to support another party; the Depression of the 1930s; the problems in the Depression; debt; financing education; farm loans; the grain trade; income tax and meeting Churchill. Scene 4, on reel 8614-2314 consists of Bracken speaking about: his success in gaining support of other parties (goes out of sync at this point for a short time); cooperation in government; majority versus minority governments; running the government; cabinet solidarity; education; land taxes; hydro; telephones; the liquor issue; and why he became leader of the federal Conservative Party. Can 8614-2313, Scene 5, take 1, and Scene 6, take 1, consists of audio of Bracken speaking about the following: Manitoba; the debt; the Depression and bond holders; the federal report on Manitoba's finances; his health problems and consequent resignation; the need for federal help to deal with farming problems; his life since retirement; the function of government; the need for majority government; a solution to the agrarian problem; surpluses and sub-marginal farms; his views about his political career and his dislike of politics.
