Series consists of an almost complete set of diaries covering most of Sandford Fleming's adult life. The diary, for Fleming, was a record of his movements and of key events, family events especialky; he often made no entries if his day had been a routine one.

The diaries contain irregular and brief entries noting attendance at board meetings; social engagements, arrival and departure of prominent persons; health and fortune of family and friends and travel in Canada and abroad. Years 1844, 1846-1847 and 1878 are not covered.

Fleming also transcribed the entries from these original diaries into three loose-leaf binders covering 1843-1914. Two out of three are available in this series, and cover the years 1867-1914.

General note:

Individual diaries are described up to the year 1888. Remainder of diaries will be described in due course.

Conservation:

The diaries for the years 1848 to 1870 underwent conservation in early 2016.

Arrangement note:

Notebook "Journey to Upper Canada" dated 15 June to 18 September, 1845; a 1849 diary (notebook); and a sketchbook of pencil drawing made in June of 1870 of the Thousand Islands, Grande Metis, Little Metis, the Matapedia, Bonami Point and other unidentified places, including a pencial drawing of "Camp No. 3 Matapedia River 26 June 1864" were placed in volume 148 for conservation purposes.
