Edward E. Ayer's collection brought together correspondence, instructions, journals, petitions and reports documenting the French and British struggles for dominance over North America. Selections from the Ayer Collection, chosen for their relevance to Canada, are available both as photocopies and on microfilm (reel M-1680).

Ayer, Edward Everett, 1841-1927 : Edward E. Ayer (1841-1927) was a collector of materials documenting the early contacts between American Indians and Europeans, and the discovery, exploration and settlement of the New World.

General note:

Copied in 1970 from the originals in the Ayer Collection at the Newberry Library, Chicago, Illinois. Note that the sequence of documents on microfilm reel H-1680 differs somewhat from that of the photocopies. Note also that copies of other selections from the Ayer Collection had been acquired previously and described separately, such as a transcription of the 1708 census of Acadia (see MG 18, F18).
