Fonds consists of the personal and official papers of James Pattison Telford relating to his militia service with the Leith Rifle Company and later the 31st Grey Battalion of Infantry and to the 31st Grey Battalion Rifle Association.

Fonds also consists of photographs depicting activities and personnel, including James Pattison Telford, of the 31st (Grey) Battalion of Infantry at Niagara, Toronto (Stanley Barracks), and Rockcliffe, Ont., ca. 1865-1906. Also included as a portrait of Colonel W.D. Otter. Photos by unknown photographers and by the following: W.C. Cain, Owen Sound; Galbraith, Toronto; A.A. Gray & Co., Toronto; George Holmes, Owen Sound; John Kennedy, Toronto; A.G. Pittaway, Ottawa; W.H. Quinn, Niagrara; Shannon & McCallum, London; H.J. Woodside, Portage la Prairie.

Telford, James Pattison, 1839-1933 : Militia officer

James Pattison Telford (1839-1933) served as lieutenant with the Leith Rifle Company from its formation in January 1863. In June 1866, in expectation of a Fenian attack, Telford and the Leith Rifle Company were called out, serving as part of a flying column between Toronto and Kingston. Later that year Telford attended the School of Military Instruction at Kingston, obtaining 2nd and lst Class Certificates. In September 1866, the Leith Rifle Company was incorporated with other Grey County independent companies as the 31st Grey Battalion of Infantry.

James Pattison Telford served as Captain of the Leith Company (No. 3 Company), 31st Grey Battalion of Infantry from January 1867. In 1885, Telford was instrumental in the formation of the 31st Grey Battalion Rifle Association, part of a larger movement for developing rifle-shooting in the militia. Telford was promoted to major with the 31st Battalion in September 1887, and served as lieutenant-colonel of the battalion from November 1894 until retiring from the service in 1900. He was awarded the Fenian Raid Medal and the Volunteers Decoration (V.D.) for long service. He retained an active interest in militia matters until his death.
