Fonds consists of material related to Harold Steele's military service with the 259th Battalion Canadian Expeditionary Force, and consists of correspondence with his fiancée Josie Libby during 1918-1919. Steele's letters provide an account of military life at a number of training camps at Niagara-on-the-Lake, Toronto, Port Arthur, Winnipeg and Vancouver, and at Vladivastock and Guernestai in Siberia during his service with the 259th Battalion. Also included are some background and explanatory notes to the correspondence, with three photos showing Pte. Harold Steele with family and friends at Niagara, Ont., and with the Lewis Gun Section in Siberia, 1919.

Steele, Harold, 1898-1970 : Harold Steele was born on May 16, 1898 in Hastings County, Ontario. His family moved to Osseo in Cane Township, Ontario in 1912. Prior to enlisting, he had worked as a section hand on the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario (T&NO) Railroad. Steele enlisted on May 28, 1918 in Toronto. He served with the 259th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force and saw service in Siberia. He was discharged on June 12, 1919 in Toronto, and then returned to work for the T&NO, later the Ontario Northland Railway, working in maintenance and repair at Osseo, Holland, Porquis Junction, Cochrane, Englehart and North Bay, Ontario. At the time of his retirement in 1963, he was General Roadmaster. Steele married Josie Libby in 1922. He died in 1970 in North Bay.
