Fonds consists of a daily diary covering the experiences of Lieutenant Ayton Richey Leggo, 58th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, for the period 15 to 29 November 1915 and 3 January to 25 June 1916. Subjects covered include: the final training of the Battalion in Canada; the trip from Toronto to Halifax; the Atlantic crossing aboard the ex-Cunard liner Saxonia; battalion training in England; duties with the battalion's rear party; leave in England; signal training; and his first experiences in an aircraft.

Also included is a portrait photograph of Lieutenant Ayton Richey Leggo, No. 13 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps.

Leggo, Ayton Richey, 1895-1917 : Ayton Richey Leggo, military officer, was born in Ottawa, the son of Dr. William Ayton Leggo, a dentist, and Charlotte Mary Leggo (née Waugh). He was educated at Lisgar Collegiate Institute in Ottawa and at the Royal College of Dental Surgeons, University of Toronto. He enlisted at Toronto and went overseas as a Lieutenant with the 58th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. When the Battalion went to France as part of the 3rd Canadian Division, Lieutenant Leggo remained in England with the battalion's rear party. He subsequently served in France with the Canadian Cavalry Corps and in November 1916 joined the Royal Flying Corps as an Observer with No. 13 Squadron. He and his pilot were killed 24 March 1917 near Arras when their aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire. Lieutenant Leggo is buried in the British Military Cemetery, Aubigny, France.
