Fonds consists of correspondence, memos, subject files, reference files, near-print material, photos, slides, and audio and video cassettes documenting the political career of the Hon. John C. Crosbie through his early years in Opposition (1976-1984), as well as the years in which he was a key figure in Prime Minister Mulroney's Cabinet. Between the years 1984-1993, he held the following ministerial posts: Justice & Solicitor-General, Transportation, International Trade and Commerce, and Fisheries and Oceans as well as the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. His activity as minister is well detailed to 1993, the year in which he retired from politics.

The fonds also contains lapel buttons relating to Crosbie's election campaigns; free trade; and promoting the Progressive Conservative party and Jean Charest, 1965-1993.

Crosbie, John, 1931- : John Carnell Crosbie was born on 30 January 1931 in St. John's, Newfoundland. Following his studies at Bishop Field College in St. John's and St. Andrew's College in Aurora, he attended Queen's University in Kingston and then studied law at Dalhousie University, where he was a medallist in Law and the winner of the Canadian Bar Association's Viscount Bennett Scholarship as the outstanding law student in Canada. He later pursued postgraduate studies at the Institute for Advanced Legal Studies of the University of London and the London School of Economics. He was called to the Newfoundland Bar in October 1957, establishing a law practice in St. John's.

Crosbie's political career began at the municipal level. Elected to the St. John's City Council in November 1965, he became the city's Deputy Mayor. The following year, he successfully contested his first provincial election in the riding of St. John's West. He was re-elected in 1971, 1972, and 1975 and served in the Newfoundland Cabinet as Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing (1966-1967), Minister of Health (1967-1968), Minister of Finance and Economic Development (1972-1974), and Minister of Fisheries and Minister of Mines and Energy (1975-1976).

In 1976, he ran in a federal by-election and was elected as the Member of Parliament for St. John's West. He served in the Clark government as Minister of Finance (1979-1980) and in the Mulroney government as Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada (1984-1986), Minister of Transport (1986-1988), Minister for International Trade (1988-1991), and Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and Minister for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (1991-1993). He contested the leadership of the federal Progressive Conservative party in 1983. He retired from active politics on 25 October 1993. He now lives in St. John's, Newfoundland, where he practices law with the firm of Halley, Hunt.
