Fonds consists of correspondence, 1859-1862, to and from Lt. Col. Hawkins. Includes four letters from W.F. Tolmie to Hawkins, 1859, three letters from astronomer, R.W. Haig, 1859, to Hawkins and correspondence from Hawkins to the Secretary of State for War, and to the War Office, regarding the boundary commission's work. Also includes correspondence from Hawkins to the Secretary of State for the Colonies, 1859, to the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, 1860, to Lord Lyons, Her Majesty's Envoy at Washington, 1860-61, and to E. Hammond, Under Secretary of State, Foreign Office, 1862 about the boundary commission's activities. Relations with Archibald Campbell figure in this correspondence. Photocopy, 45 pages.

Hawkins, John Summerfield, fl. 1858-1867 : Military Officer

John Summerfield Hawkins was appointed commissioner of the British North American Land Boundary Commission which delineated the 49th parallel between the mainland of British Columbia and the United States, 1858-1862. Its counterpart, the American party, under Archibald Campbell, commenced its work in 1857. Hawkins attained the rank of lieutenant colonel on 12 August 1858 in the Corps of Royal Engineers.

Acquired in 1991 from the Royal Engineers Museum, England, through the London Office of the National Archives of Canada.
