Fonds consists of a typescript copy (12 pages) of Lance Cattermole's account of the attack by the 2nd Canadian Division on Courcelette, entitled "Attack on the Somme-15th and 16th September 1916". With the addition of two maps, he outlines his experiences with the 21st Battalion in this attack, and details the actions to secure the Sugar Refinery, just outside the village of Courcelette on the main Albert-Bapaume road. Also included is a biographical entry for Cattermole.

Cattermole, Lancelot Harry Mosse, 1898- : Lancelot (Lance) Harry Mosse Cattermole, soldier and artist, was born in England in 1898, but came to Canada in 1914 to take up farming. In August 1915, he joined the Simcoe Foresters and later enlisted in one of the overseas battalions, the 76th Infantry Battalion. On arriving in France in May 1916, two months short of his eighteenth birthday, he was drafted into the 21st (Eastern Ontario) Infantry Battalion. Cattermole served with the 21st Battalion on the Western Front for some six months in 1916, until he was found to be under age and was returned to England. Before this happened, he had taken part in the attack by the 2nd Canadian Division on Flers-Courcelette, 15-16 September 1916, on the Somme. Following the war, Lance Cattermole studied art and subsequently became a distinguished artist. In 1992, he was living in Worthing, West Sussex, England.
