Silent footage of United Nations headquarters in New York and interviews with Canadian foreign minister Lester B. Pearson and General Assembly president Prince Wan Waithay a Kon of Thailand. Footage shows: a "Canadians Abroad" title card; scenes of fighting in Indonesia and people running from tanks and trucks; UN troops; views of the General Assembly, including preparations of reporters, a cameraman, and a sound man; the UN buildings; the UN and member nation flags; "Let US Beat Swords into Plowshares", the statue by Soviet Sculptor Yeugery Vuchetich; "CBC Newsmagazine" reporter Gordon Burwash looking at interior murals; a Security Council meeting; and various delegates from Great Britain, the US, India, the USSR, and elsewhere, arriving, talking and listening. The General Assembly president speaks about UN projects like reforestation in Greece, school construction in Mexico, and industrial development in the Philippines; about the debating role of the assembly; and about the diversity of the UN members. Pearson speaks of the achievements of the UN, acknowledges the current problems in the Middle East, and says the UN reflects rather than creates the world situation. There are large breaks between some scenes. The footage was used, in part, to illustrate a "Newsmagazine" report on the UN. <1500s>
