Biography of John E. Askwith written by G.E. Ralph (p.1) as an introduction to Askwith's recollections of New Edinburgh written c. 1925 (pp. 2-9). Askwith discusses the arrival of Philomen Wright, the work of Thomas MacKay, the distillery of Issac McTaggart, early New Edinburgh and various incidents, 1800-1925. Transcript, 9 pages.

Askwith, John English, 1841-1925 : Businessman

John English Askwith was born in Rockcliffe in 1841 the son of John Askwith and Elizabeth English, both natives of Yorkshire. J.E. Askwith built and operated a sawmill on the Ottawa in the late 1860s, but shortly thereafter sold this business and established himself as a general contractor. Among other buildings he erected were the Government Printing Bureau and the Geological Museum.

After retirement, Askwith served as Chief Police Magistrate of Ottawa and member of the Ottawa Municipal Council.
