The provenance of this collection is diverse. Volume 1 is probably the material which was presented by Samuel Keefer, at some time prior to 1890, and originally catalogued as Volume 153 of the obsolete "M" Series. It has been inventoried in its present location at least since 1961. Volume 2, which contains the names of two previous owners, Thomas Cooper and D.C. Mackenzie, both of Ottawa, was acquired in 1971. Volume 4 was presented in 1972 by Mr. George Parlee of Ottawa, Ont.

Volume 3 was photocopied in 1964, through the courtesy of Major McGill, R.C.E., from originals then in the possession of the Department of National Defence.

Material relating to the Canal is scattered widely in the P.A.C's holdings, but researchers are especially referred to the papers of John Burrows (MG 24, H12); of the Historical Society of Ottawa (MG 9, D 8-68); and of Andrew Merrilees (MG 31, A 10). Substantial quantities of material will also be found in the Government Archives Division in RG 11, RG 12, and RG 43, as well as in the holdings of the Picture Division.
