Fonds consists of textual records consisting of letters from William Kirby to Hannah Lowe Servos containing references to Kirby's novel THE GOLDEN DOG; a letter to William Kirby; two letters concerning the Lowe Family; and a statement by Hannah Lowe Servos on THE GOLDEN DOG.

Also included in fonds is a photographic portrait of William Kirby.

Kirby, William, 1817-1906 : William Kirby was born in Kingston-upon-Hull, England and emigrated to the United States with his parents in 1832. He later settled at Niagara-on-the-Lake and became editor of the NIAGARA MAIL in 1850. Strong Tory and United Empire Loyalist sentiments inspired Kirby's COUNTER MANIFESTO TO THE ANNEXATIONISTS (1849), which first appeared under the pseudonym "Britannicus". Deeply interested in local history, he published in 1859 THE U.E.: A TALE OF UPPER CANADA anonymously. Kirby's most important work is the historical romance, THE GOLDEN DOG (Le chien d'or); a romance of the days of Louis Quinze in Quebec, which appeared first in 1877 with an authorized version in 1896. The novel was translated into French by Pamphile Lemay in 1884. The Canadian Encyclopedia, 1985 p. 943.
