The manuscript is entitled "St. Lawrence Pilot, vols. 1 and 2. Original Directions by Captain W.H. Bayfield 1828-1855." Sailing directions for the Gulf and River St. Lawrence from the east (including the south coast of Labrador, Strait of Belle Isle, Cape Breton Island, Prince Edward Island, Magdalen Islands, and Anticosti) to Montreal. Includes some observations on settlements and translations of native place names. The main text is preceded by a list of contents and followed by (a) a list of latitudes and longitudes with high water times and variations up to 1836, and (b) a series of addenda to the text. Edited versions of this manuscript are available in two publications of the Admiralty Hydrographic Department: (1) The St. Lawrence Pilot, 4th edition (2 vols; London, 1860), originally issued in sections as Sailing Directions For the Gulf and River of St. Lawrence... (1837, 1847 and 1857); and (2) Maritime Positions in the Gulf and River St. Lawrence, on the South Coast of Nova Scotia (London, 1857). Compare also Bayfield's The Nova Scotia Pilot, first edition (2 parts, London, 1856, 1860).
