Fonds consists of records concerning the operation, administration and interests of the Home Bank of Canada; and the subsequent failure, liquidation, claims, court records, assets and liabilities, depositor relief efforts through the Depositors Relief Association, and I.E. Weldon, solicitor responsible for closure, 1879-1937. Two items are in horizontal storage, containers 827 and 828: a plan of the organization of th Home Bank of Canada and a poster: 'Mortgage Sale of Valuable Farm Property' at the Minto Hotel, Cabri, Saskatchewan, 28 June 1924.

Fonds also contains photographs of Moose Jaw and Tantallon, Sask.;Howe Sound, B.C.; the 1932 annual meeting of the Chartered insititute of Secretaries; and a portrait of Mr Issac E. Weldon.

Home Bank of Canada : The Home Bank of Canada, a federally chartered bank with Head Office in Toronto, Ont., was established in 1903. It grew out of the long-established Home Savings and Loan Company. Its business included seventy branches located in most major Canadian cities, as well as a number of towns and villages. As early as 1914, the Bank began to experience difficulties which were blamed on management. By 1916, Minister of Finance Sir Thomas White received complaints about the Bank but refused to order an investigation.

On 17 August 1923, the Home Bank was forced to suspend operations, and shortly after the Bank's assets were liquidated. The failure of the Home Bank caused serious financial loss to its 60,000 depositors, and to most of its 1,686 shareholders. After numerous petitions to the federal government for relief, the case was taken to the courts. Five directors, an accountant and auditor were all found guilty of conspiracy and filing false returns and were sentenced to imprisonment; a conviction that was cancelled upon appeal.

In 1925, a Royal Commission studied the matter and, as a result, Parliament made partial restitution to the depositors.
