Fonds consists of letters from John Symons of the 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles to his parents. The letters describe his training in Canada and Great Britain and his limited battle experiences. Symons was killed in the first major military encounter of his unit, in the Battle of Ypres.

Fonds also includes photographic material depicting John H. Symons as a child about 12 years old, and in the uniform of adjutant in the 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles.

Symons, John Hannaford, 1890-1916 : John H. Symons, soldier, was born in 1890 at Toronto, Ont., and was educated at Trinity College School of Port Hope, Ont. and the Royal Military College. In 1912, he joined the Governor General's Body Guard in Toronto and enlisted in 1914 in the 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles as a Lieutenant. Promoted in 1915 to Adjutant, he was killed at the Battle of Sanctuary Wood.
