Fonds consists of textual records as follows: under the heading "Mem. Book", John Warren Dease recorded travels to and from Fort Vancouver, 24 August-26 December 1829, on 17 pages in a pocket book, the binding and unused pages of which have not survived. The 9-page typescript of that text is prefaced by anonymous comments on Dease and his career in the fur trade. Lawrence J. Burpee's typescript entitled THE COLUMBIA JOURNAL OF JOHN WARREN DEASE 1829, incorporates a lenghty introduction (pages 1-8), the text of the original journal and extensive explanatory footnotes (pages 9-37), and a list of index headings (pages 38-44).

Dease, John Warren, 1783-[ca.1830] : John Warren Dease, a native of Ireland, was a brother of Peter Warren Dease, and father to William Dease (1827-1913). He spent his early years in North America in the service of the North West Company, having charge of Rainy Lake House between ca. 1814 and 1817. Upon joining the Hudson's Bay Company in 1821, he became a Chief Trader and spent his last years at Fort Colville (at Kettle Falls on the Columbia River), where he died in 1830.

The original journal was acquired in 1929. The typescript copy of the journal was presented in 1908 by Mr. Powell of Victoria, B.C. The typescript by L.J. Burpee bears neither date of composition nor date of acquisition.
