The fonds consists of documents, 1629-1678, and n.d., relating to the titles of the English and French crowns, and of various individuals, to parts of Canada, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland. Included are: treaties, grants, letters, reports, descriptions, depositions and certificates, minutes and orders of the Privy Council, petitions, and propositions, connected with the claims of Sir William Alexander, 1st Earl of Stirling (ca, 1577-1640); Claude (ca. 1570-post-1636) and Charles (1593-1666) de Saint-Étienne de La Tour; Colonel Thomas Temple (1614-1674); Colonel William Crowne (1617-1682); Sir David Kirke (ca. 1597-1654) and his family; and Sir George Calvert, 1st Baron Baltimore (1580-1632) and his family.

Also included are: two letters from Thomas Povey (fl. 1633-1685) to Colonel Thomas Temple, later Sir Thomas Temple, Bart. (1614-1674), Governor of Nova Scotia, 1657-1670. The main topics are English politics, business losses, Captain Woodgreene's discovery of copper in Nova Scotia, and Povey's continued support of Temple.

Povey, Thomas, fl. 1633-1685 : British civil servant.

Thomas Povey (fl. 1633-1685) was the son of Justinian Povey, auditor of the exchequer and accountant-general to Anne of Denmark. In 1633, he entered Gray's Inn. He sat in the Long Parliament as M.P. for Liskeard, Cornwall, 1646-1647. In 1657, he was a member of Cromwell's council for the colonies, and was elected M.P. for Bossiney in 1659.

After the Restoration in 1660, Povey was much favoured at court and held many offices: treasurer to the Duke of York, 1660-1668; receiver-general for the rents and revenues of the plantations in Africa and America from 1661; one of the masters of requests from 1662, as well as treasurer for Tangier, and surveyor-general of the victualling department. Samuel Pepys (1633-1703), who in 1665 succeeded him in both of the two last offices, had a very low opinion of his abilities. At the accession of James II in 1685, he was removed, with all his colleagues, from the office of master of requests, but was awarded a pension of 100 a year, and was continued a member of the queen dowager's council.

Egerton Manuscripts 2395, which was added to the holdings of the British Museum (now the British Library) in 1875, is a collection of miscellaneous official papers relating to the British settlements in America and the West Indies. Most of the papers are copies of documents submitted to, or issuing from, the Council of Trade and Plantations, with a few original letters, 1627-1699. A large part of the collection appears to have been formed by Thomas Povey, Secretary to the Council., At some time prior to 1915 (although work on it may not have been completed until 1919), the National Archives of Canada transcribed a number of small excerpts from Egerton MSS. 2395 (ff. 311-328v, 340-341v, 426, and 451-454), which were bound with material from Add. MSS. 14034, 19049, and 27859, in a volume entitled Stirling Peerage Nova Scotia, 1732-1763, that originally constituted Volume 371 of the old "M" Series. This volume was unbound in 1990 and its contents dispersed to their separate locations., [Somewhat later], the National Archives of Canada also transcribed another small excerpt (ff. 199-201) from Egerton MSS. 2395, which was bound with transcripts from Add. MSS. 15489 in a volume entitled Papers Relating to New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, &c, which originally constituted Volume 382 of the old "M" Series. This volume also was unbound in 1990 and its contents separated., Then in 1915, further transcriptions from Egerton MSS. 2395 were made (ff. 17-18, 19-24, 25-25v, 25*-25v*, 26-26v, 36, 258-262, 263-264, 265, 266, 308-328v, 340-341v, 447-448, 449, 450-451, 452, 453-454, 471-471v, 497-498v, 560-566v, 672-676v). Also in 1915, the National Archives of Canada transcribed two small excerpts (ff. 27-28, 98v) from Additional Manuscripts 11411, which is an entry book of letters relating to public affairs and to private business in the West Indies, written by Thomas Povey (fl. 1633-1685), 1655-1660. Add. MSS. 11411 had been added to the holdings of the British Museum (now the British Library) in 1838.
