Item is an excerpt, ca. 1541, from A Brief Somme of Geographie by Roger Barlow (d. 1554). It deals with the subject of a northern passage to the east and the opportunities for voyages of discovery, with special reference to Newfoundland and Labrador. This part of Barlow's Brief Somme is practically a repetition of what his friend and business associate Robert Thorne (d. 1527) had also advocated to Henry VIII in his letter of 1527. Barlow, Roger, died 1554 : Bristol merchant, voyager and author.

Roger Barlow (d. 1554) was probably the son of John Barlow, whose lands were forfeited to the Earl of Oxford when he was attainted in 1496, and his wife Christian, née Barley. His three brothers (Thomas (d. 1558), John, who was chaplain to Anne Boleyn and became Dean of Worcester in 1544, and William (d. 1568), Bishop of Chichester) were all churchmen, and his sister Elizabeth (d. 1518) married first Lord Elphinstone and secondly Lord Forbes. He became a substantial merchant of Bristol, England, and Seville, Spain. In 1526-1528, he was with Sebastian Cabot (1474-1557) on his Spanish expedition to the Rio de La Plata region of South America. In 1546, with his brother Thomas, he received a grant of the manor of Slebeche in Pembrokeshire, and in 1549 was appointed Vice-Admiral of the coast for Pembrokeshire. He died in February 1554. His heir was his eldest son John, who became sheriff of Pembroke in 1561 and again in 1574.

Roger Barlow was an early proponent of English exploration to discover and establish an all-English trade route to the "new Spiceries" by way of a northwest passage to the East Indies. A Brief Somme of Geographie (edited by E.G.R. Taylor and published, 1932, by the Hakluyt Society, Second Series, No. LXIX) was written by him in the winter of 1540-1541 to support the arguments he employed in laying his proposal for northern exploration before Henry VIII. It is an English translation of the Suma de Geographia, 1518, of the Spanish colonizer, Martin Fernandez de Encisco [1470-1528], to which Barlow added much original and supplementary matter.

General note:

The Royal Manuscripts, sometimes called the Old Royal Manuscripts to distinguish them from the King's Manuscripts of George III, are a collection of manuscripts made by successive sovereigns of England from Edward IV to George II, who transferred them to the newly-founded British Museum (now the British Library) by Letters Patent of 6 August 1757. Royal MSS. 18 B, XXVIII is a volume of 101 folios containing the Brief Somme of Geographia that Roger Barlow submitted to Henry VIII, ca. 1541. In 1914, the National Archives of Canada transcribed the last pages of the volume (ff. 99v-101), because of their Canadian interest.
