Item is an autograph letter, 20 April 1703, from Colonel Robert Quary (Quarry or Quarij), Judge of the Pennsylvania Court of Vice-Admiralty, to William Blathwayt, Secretary at War. It explains the failure of the South Carolina troops to capture St. Augustine, proposes a second expedition, and urges the capture of Canada. It includes comments on the unacceptability of Andrew Hamilton (d. 26 April 1703) as William Penn's Deputy Governor of Pennsylvania.

Blathwayt, William, 1649?-1717 : British politician.

William Blathwayt, statesman, (1649?-1717) was the only son of William Blathwayt of St. Martin's-in-the-Fields, a member of the Middle Temple, by his wife Anne, daughter of Justinian Povey. His first appointment was as one of Sir William Temple's secretaries at The Hague, 1668. In August 1683, he purchased from Matthew Locke the post of Secretary at War, which he retained until 1704. He became Clerk of the Privy Council, 22 October 1686; attended William III during his campaign in Flanders; and was a commissioner of trade, 1696-1706. He retired from active life in 1710, and died at Dyrham, Gloucestershire, where he was buried on 30 August 1717.

Additional Manuscripts 11759, which was added to the holdings of the British Museum (now the British Library) in 1841, is a volume of original letters on literary, political, and miscellaneous subjects, 1550-1825. The majority of them are addressed to members of the Southwell family (Sir Robert Southwell (1635-1702), Secretary of State for Ireland; his son, the Right Hon. Edward Southwell (1671-1730); and his [grandson], Edward Southwell, Esq., etc.) and to William Blathwayt, Secretary at War. In 1915, the National Archives of Canada transcribed one small excerpt (ff. 169-170v) from it, because of its Canadian interest.
