Sloane Manuscripts 2891-2901 are 11 volumes of commonplace books of Abraham Hill (1635-1721). Sloane Manuscript 2902 contains his official memoranda as commissioner of trade. Subjects include brief notes and statistics on the French in Hudson Bay, population of Albany, New York with statistics on the Five Nations and River Indians before and after the war, two brief exerpts in French, relating to Canada from works of the French geographer Sanson, and historical accounts of Nova Scotia, New Hampshire, and Newfoundland fishery and various notes relating to New England. Sloane Manuscript 5489 is a miscellaneous assortment of papers, most of which come from Abraham Hill's collection. Transcripts, 20 pages.

Hill, Abraham, 1635-1721 : Merchant and man of science.

Abraham Hill (1635-1721) was the son of Richard Hill (d. 1660), a merchant and alderman of London. Hill entered his father's business, in which he was very successful. He also furthered his education by private study and became an ardent book and coin collector. He was one of the council of the Royal Society named in the king's charter, dated 22 April 1663, and also served as treasurer of the Royal Society, 1663-1665 and 1679-1700. At the accession of William III and Mary II in 1689, Hill became a commissioner of trade, and when Tillotson was promoted to the see of Canterbury in 1691 he appointed Hill his comptroller.

In the next reign, Hill resigned his seat at the Board of Trade and retired to his estate of St. John's in Sutton-at-Hone, Kent, which he had purchased in 1665. He died on 5 February 1721, and was buried in the chancel of Sutton Church. Hill was the friend and correspondent of Evelyn and Pepys and the kinsman of Abigail Hill, afterwards Lady Masham.

Custodial history:

The manuscript collection of Sir Hans Sloane, Bart. (1660-1753), physician to Queen Anne and George II, was purchased from his executors in 1753 by the Act of Parliament (26 Geo. II, cap. 22) that also established the British Museum (now the British Library) to be their repository. They are catalogued there as a separate collection numbered as Sloane MSS. 1-4100 and the Additional Manuscripts acquired later receive subsequent numbers in the same sequence., In 1914, the National Archives of Canada transcribed a number of selections from the Hill papers in Sloane MSS. 2902. In 1915, a further small item was transcribed from Add. MSS. 5489.
