Collection consists of copies of Additional Manuscripts 9913-9914, two folio volumes that contain muster rolls of various detachments of the Royal Regiment of Artillery, between the years 1721 and 1760. Transcripts, 56 pages.

Includes muster rolls of the detachments of the Royal Regiment of Artillery stationed in North America: at Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, October-December 1724 (ff. 2, 6, 10) and the detachment's receipt for pay, November 1724 (f. 8); in Nova Scotia, January and March 1756 (ff. 214-214v, 186-187v); and at Albany, New York, March 1756 (ff. 182-183v), 16 pages.

Great Britain. Army. Royal Regiment of Artillery : The Royal Regiment of Artillery was a part of the Board of Ordnance. In rudimentary form, the Ordnance Department dates back to the early fifteenth century and the artillery can claim to be the oldest arm of the British Army. In contrast to the cavalry and infantry, artillery appointments were personal rather than organizational until 1716, when the Royal Regiment of Artillery was established. It consisted of independent companies and a regimental headquarters at Woolwich. This was followed in 1741 by the foundation of the Royal Military Academy (not the ancestor of Sandhurst) and the organization of the arm into battalions and companies in 1756. This organization lasted throughout the Napoleonic wars and until the 1850s. The battalion organization was purely administrative in nature and the basic tactical organization continued to be the company or troop. .

Custodial history:

Additional Manuscripts 9913-9914 were transferred to the British Museum (now the British Library) by the Master-General and Board of Ordnance in 1835. In 1915, the National Archives of Canada transcribed from them a number of exerpts that were of Canadian interest.
