Fonds consists of the Entry book, 1711-1713, of Colonel Samuel Vetch (1668-1732), first British governor of Nova Scotia.

It contains copies, some of which date from as early as 1708, of correspondence, orders, reports, accounts, bills of exchange, memorials, muster rolls, deeds of sale, receipts, memoranda, affidavits, certificates and minutes, relating to the garrison at Annapolis Royal. Their chief subject is the British government's almost total neglect of the garrison and Vetch's severe financial difficulties in consequence. Among other topics included are: the 1711 expedition against Quebec under Rear-Admiral Sir Hovenden Walker (d. 1728); the quarrel between Vetch and the engineer, George Vane (d. 1722); and the land purchases of John Adams at Annapolis Royal on behalf of Sir Charles Hobby. Transcripts, 257 pages.

Vetch, Samuel, 1668-1732 : Governor of Nova Scotia.

Samuel Vetch (1668-1732) was born in Scotland on 6 December 1668. He was the second son and third child of William Veitch (1640-1722), the covenanter, and of his wife, Marion Fairlie of the house of Braid, near Edinburgh, Midlothian. Educated at the College of Utrecht in the Netherlands, he returned to England in 1688 in the army of William of Orange. He became an officer in the 26th or Cameronian Regiment, and served on the continent until 1697.

In 1710, Vetch was adjutant-general of the expedition sent to conquer Acadia. On the capture of Annapolis Royal, he was appointed the first British governor of Nova Scotia and administered the affairs of the province, 1710-1713, 1715-1717. In 1719, he returned to England to press his numerous claims for pay, etc., on the government. He died on 30 April 1732, a prisoner for debt, in the king's bench, and was buried at St. George's Church, Southwark.

The manuscript collection of Sir Hans Sloane, Bart. (1660-1753), physician to Queen Anne and George II, was purchased from his executors in 1753 by the Act of Parliament (26 Geo. II, cap. 22) that also established the British Museum (now the British Library) to be their repository. They are catalogued there as a separate collection numbered as Sloane MSS. 1-4100 and the Additional Manuscripts acquired later receive subsequent numbers in the same sequence., In 1914, the National Archives of Canada transcribed a number of selections (ff. 1-2v, 3v-5v, 6-6v, 7, 7v-8v, 10v-12, 12v-16, 16v-17v, 18v-19, 20-27, 27v-30, 30v-31, 31v-32, 32v-42, 43-45, 45v-46, 46v-47, 47v) from the entry book of Samuel Vetch (1668-1732) in Sloane MSS. 3607. Copies of material that had already been copied from the records of the Colonial Office (C.O. 5) for inclusion in the Nova Scotia "A" Series of "State Papers" were not transcribed. These and other duplicates omitted from the transcripts are noted in Finding Aid No. 599. In 1973, photocopies of the relevant duplicates were made from the Nova Scotia "A" Series transcripts and placed with the Sloane MSS. 3607 material for the convenience of users.
