Four specialized series of documents accumulated in the course of statistical reporting by the Civil and Provincial Secretaries are segregated from the primary correspondence series. The statistical returns from public officers (B 6) and the returns of population and assessment (B 26) can readily be linked to the Blue Books and to special reports for the Colonial Office. The gaol calendars and prison returns (B 27) are less directly linked to specific reports; the same may be said of the customs records (B 32).

Upper Canada and Canada West. Provincial Secretary. Board of Registration and Statistics : A wide range of statistical reports were supplied by the Lieutenant Governor to the Colonial Office and to the Legislature. These reports were based on data collected by the Civil Secretary and by the Provincial Secretary and Registrar. By 1821, reporting practices had formalized; the Blue Books of Statistics (see RG 1, E 13 and MG 11, Colonial Office 47) were produced annually thereafter. The Civil Secretary was responsible for preparing reports enclosed in despatches to the Colonial Office. From 1832 onward, however, the Provincial Secretary was responsible for preparing the Blue Books. After the union of Upper and Lower Canada, the Board of Registration and Statistics, composed of the Provincial Secretary, the Receiver General and the Inspector General, took over the task.

Correspondence relating to the collection of statistical data before and after 1841 may also be found in the Upper Canada Sundries (series A 1) and the Provincial Secretary's numbered files (series C 1). The lists of appointments to office maintained by the Civil Secretary (see RG 5, B 7) may also have been used for compiling statistical reports. The printed Journals of the Legislature contain numerous statistical reports.
