Fonds consists of correspondence addressed to Major Charles Preston, at St. John, by Richard Prescott, William Hunter and Richard Montgomery, together with a few returns of troops and a plan of the redoubts at St. John, as well as a list of the documents included in the volume, 1775-1776, 62 pages.

The fonds also contains a journal of the siege of St. John with the name of J. André on the fly-leaf, professional analysis of the signature on the fly-leaf and handwriting of this journal in 1976 indicate that it was written by Major John André, dated 17 September to 3 November 1775, 52 pages. It is believed that the journal was written by André on order of Preston, who was André's commanding offer during the siege.

In addition, the fonds also contains the following document in horizontal storage: "Plan of the two redbouts [i.e., redouts] erected at St. Johns on the River Sorrel in the province of Quebec in the summer of 1775". Item is located in container 2.

Preston, Charles, fl. 1753-1768 : Charles Preston was commissioned lieutenant in the 26th Regiment in 1753, captain in 1759, and major in 1768. He commanded St. John during its siege by the Continental Army in 1775. His subordinate, John André (1751-1780), later conducted negotiations with Benedict Arnold, was captured and hanged as a spy.
