Collection consists of nine microfilmed letters from Bryan George Davies Cooke to his brother Philip concerning regimental and social life in Kaffraria (South Africa) and in Canada at Montreal, Toronto and Brantford with details on such subjects as regimental moves, prospects for promotion, finances, particularly Canadian banking, stocks and bonds, bird taxidermy, horses and riding, regimental social life in Canada, and family matters, 1856-1858. In addition, there is also a microfilmed letter from Sir William Syre to Byran George Davies Cooke offering advice about regimental life and the prospects for promotion, detailing Eyre's experiences in the 73rd with history and news of the regiment, dated 17 March 1857. This material is located on microfilm reel A-1609.

Davies, Bryan George, fl. 1853 : Military officer

Bryan George Davies Cooke purchased a commission as an ensign in the 73rd Regiment of Foot, 22 April 1853. He was promoted to lieutenant, 22 December 1854, and to captain, 6 August 1858. He served with the 73rd Kaffraria (South Africa) and in Canada at Montreal, Toronto and Brantford. He was related to Sir William Eyre, Commander-in-Chief in British North America, 1856-1859, and Administrator of Canada, 20 June to 2 November 1857, through Eyre's mother, the former Georgina Cooke.
