Correspondence entered in the first section of each volume displays the Board of Trade arrangement of papers, whereby bundles of correspondence for each colony were assigned an alphabetical letter and the constituent documents numbered in chronological order of receipt by the Board. Apparently, when an arbitrary amount of material was accumulated under each letter (e.g., Newfoundland, O 1-160, P 1-66, Q 1-128), the letter in use was discontinued and the following alphabetical letter was utilized, beginning again at number 1 for each new letter. Much of this material was later bound in to volumes., The basic principle of arrangement used in the Secretary of State section of the register was essentially chronological. Only some of the original correspondence of the Secretary of State relating to the Colonial Office was entered in CO 326.
