Fonds consists of correspondence, 1941-1971, including letters from Marius Barbeau, Béla Bartok and Walter de la Mare; programmes, and a 1953 BMI agreement (photocopies, 19 pages); manuscript of "Songs of Prayer and Praise: A Choral Cycle for a Cappella Mixed Chorus", written in 1953; programmes and clippings (originals, 1.3cm), photocopies, 19 pages.

The fond also contains a photograph of Mr. Arthur Letonal and Violet Archer signing the Golden Book with Montréal Mayor Camillien Houde and Frances Galtman, Montréal, Québec, 12 June 1952.

Biography/Administrative history:

Archer, Violet, 1913- : Violet Archer, composer and pianist, was born in Montreal, Quebec, and studied music at McGill and Yale Universities; her teachers included Claude Champagne, Béla Bartok, and Paul Hindemith. Her compositions have received various national and international awards and prizes. From 1950 to 1961, she taught music at universities in the United States and became a professor in the University of Alberta Music Department in 1962. Her work includes choral music, chamber pieces, songs, and orchestral music. She has also published articles on music. She retired in 1978.
