Larnder, Harold, 1902-1981 : Harold Larnder, operational research scientist, was born in Southampton, England, and came to Halifax in 1907. He studied physics at Dalhousie University, 1919-1924, and worked for electrical companies developing and installing aircraft radio systems and air navigation aids in various parts of the world, 1925-1935. He then joined the U.K. Air Ministry Research Establishment and worked on the coordination of radar information with the Royal Air Force's fighter defences, and helped develop the new technique known as develop operational research (OR). During World War II, Larnder was a scientific advisor to RAF Fighter Command, Coastal Command and Allied Expeditionary Air Force in Europe.

After World War II Larnder worked for the U.K. Ministry of Supply in developing radio and radar for civil aviation and was the first civilian scientist to attend the Imperial Defence College, 1947. Afterwards he worked for the Defence Research Policy Staff (Whitehall) and the Armament Development Establishment. In 1951 he returned to Canada to join the Defence Research Board to develop a radar system for Canada. During 1954-1956 Larnder was director of a scientific advisory team in Washington which helped form the North American Air Defence Command (NORAD). Returning to Ottawa, he became director of scientific intelligence for the RCAF.

In 1960 he went to Washington as a defence advisor to the Canadian Embassy. Larnder's last position was senior operational scientist with the Department of National Defence from which he retired in April 1967. Larnder was then an operational research consultant. He was involved in the Canadian Operational Research Society (CORS) serving as president, 1966-1967, and wrote a number of papers on the history of the subject.
