Fonds consists of a narrative of a journey from England to Upper Canada. The author, John Slade, left Portsmouth, 28 September 1814, sailing with the transports in the Quebec, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland convoy. After a rather stormy voyage, he landed "on the 23 Nov. 1815" (sic) on the Island of Orleans, Lower Canada, and proceeded to Kingston, Upper Canada, via Quebec, Trois Rivières, Montreal, Cornwall, Prescott and Brockville. His account of the journey includes mention of the wreck of the Belfield encountered off the coast of Newfoundland; his opinions of the French Canadians; comments (not entirely accurate) on the Glengarry settlers; a second hand account of the Battle of Chrysler's Farm; and adverse views on the behaviour of Sir George Prevost. At the end of the narrative is a pencilled outline of the plot for a book, "'Twixt Love and Duty", utilizing the experiences of the journey. At the back of the book are six water-colour sketches of summer views of Niagara Falls and the surrounding area.

Slade, John, fl. 1814 : Nothing is known of John Slade apart from what may be gathered from this unit. In 1814 he was an unmarried young man travelling with the troop transports in the Quebec convoy on his way to the British army stationed at Kingston, Upper Canada. He may have been one of the two John Slades listed as lieutenants in the British Army Lists for that year, but that does not seem very likely since the two regiments in question (the lst Royal) Regiment of Dragoons and the 87th or Prince of Wales' Irish Regiment of Foot do not appear to have been serving in Canada at that time, and the indications are that he was a departmental rather than a regimental officer.
