Fonds consists of records relating to Charles Kruger's career as an officer in the Royal Canadian Artillery and in defence research establishments at National Defence Headquarters. His papers cover segments of his career and focus on the development of armanents research, design and production in the Canadian Army. Training materials on military education and technical expertise and specialization in combat arms are included. Kruger's interest in military history, as well as his father before him, are also documented.

The fonds also contains photographs depicting Canadian military personnel and activities, 1887-[ca. 1955], acquired by Charles Kruger during his career as an officer of the Royal Canadian Artillery, 1928-1960.

Kruger, Charles, 1909-1982 : Charles Kruger was born into a military family at Ottawa, Ont., 12 May 1909. He was educated in the city's Glebe Collegiate Institute. He joined the 3rd Field Company, Canadian Engineers, in the Non-Permanent Active Militia, and in 1928, entered the Royal Canadian Artillery in the Permanent Active Militia. Rising swiftly through the ranks, he was chosen for the Master Gunners' Section in December, 1936, and was attending the Military College of Science at Shrivenham, Berks., U.K., when war broke out in September, 1939. He was quickly summoned to Canadian Army Headquarters at London, commissioned in July, 1940, and sent to Ottawa in 1942, where his expertise in armament design was in great demand.

He was promoted Captain in January, 1941, Major in November, 1943, and Lieutenant-Colonel in August, 1945. He served with the Master General of Ordnance until November, 1943, and was then posted to the office of the Director of Artillery. In October, 1946, he was appointed Technical Staff Officer, Second Grade, in the Directorate of Armament Development, and eventually became Deputy Director, Plans and Analysis, there. In September 1958, he was posted as a Technical Staff Officer, First Grade, to the Directorate of Design and Development, where he was Deputy Director until he retired in May, 1960. Charles Kruger died in July, 1982.
