Fonds consists of the following series of textual records: Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (C.C.F.) Women's Committee, 1945-1952; New Democratic Party (N.D.P.) Federal Women's Committee, 1961-1968; Ottawa-Carleton Homes for the Aged, 1978-1984; Personal correspondence and reference files, 1934-1980; Ottawa Senior Citizens' Council and Council on Aging, 1975-1990; Hon. Stanley Knowles, 1917-1920, 1946-1984; C.C.F./N.D.P. miscellaneous, and personal, n.d., 1958-1981; as well as documents containing information on a variety of appointments, honours and tributes bestowed upon Mr. Knowles, his political activities after his 1981 stroke, letters and notes addressed to Mrs. Marjorie Mann.

The fonds contains photographs depicting activities of Marjorie Mann; members of her family; Ontario C.C.F. Woman's Committee; and Stanley Knowles, 1947-[ca. 1980].

The fonds also contains a portrait of a man [possibly Frederick H. Varley], done when he was a student in Antwerp, Belgium; with another portrait on the verso, 1989.

Mann, Marjorie, 1909- : Marjorie Mann was born in Toronto in 1909. After graduating from the University of Toronto and Ontario College of Education, she taught in Windsor. In 1935, she married Walter Mann and moved to Ottawa. She was deeply involved in the Young Women's Christian Association, and was chairman of the Ottawa YWCA, 1945-1947. She was instrumental in the formation of the Ontario CCF Women's Committee and was its chairman, 1947-1950. This committee campaigned for women's rights, social causes and the CCF Party. In 1950 she went back to teaching and eventually became the head of the English department for the Ottawa Board of Education. After the formation of the New Democratic Party, Mann served as chairman of the NDP Federal Women's Committee from 1962 to 1967. During the 1970's Marjorie Mann was concerned with the plight of senior citizens. She served on several committees including the Ottawa Senior Citizens Council, and the Council on Aging.
