Hudson's Bay Company : James Hargrave (1798-1865), born in Roxburghshire, Scotland, was educated at Fysshe's Academy. He taught school for a year before moving with his family to Beauharnois in Lower Canada where he abandoned teaching for a position with the North West Company at Sault Ste. Marie in 1820. After the coalition of the Hudson's Bay and North West companies, he served as a clerk at Fort Garry and at York Factory from 1826 to 1850, being appointed in charge of the district in 1835. In 1851, he was placed in charge of the Sault Ste. Marie District. He retired in 1859 and died at Brockville in May 1865.

Joseph Hargrave (1841-1894), born at York Factory, was the eldest son of James and Letitia Hargrave. He joined the Hudson's Bay Company in 1861 as an apprentice clerk at Upper Fort Garry. He was promoted clerk in 1864, junior chief trader in 1878 and chief factor in 1879. He retired in 1888 and died in Edinburgh 23 February 1894.
