Fonds consists of 3 diaries: Leonidas Hubbard Jr., 7 July-18 October 1903; Mina Benson Hubbard, 1 January-27 December 1905; George Elson, 25 June-18 November 1905. The diaries were kept during explorations in Labrador by Hubbard and his wife. Hubbard led an expedition across the north-eastern portion of the Labrador peninsula, 1903 to 1905. This material is located on microfilm reel A-26.

Hubbard, Leonidas Jr., 1872-1903 (family) : Leonidas Hubbard Jr., was an American journalist and explorer who died while on an expedition in Labrador. His wife, Mina Benson Hubbard (later Mrs. M.B.H. Ellis), was born near Cobourg, Ont., in 1901. She had been a member of the nursing profession but continued her husband's work after his death in 1905. Accompanied by a guide, George Elson, Mina organized and led an expedition across the north-eastern portion of the Labrador peninsula, and was the first non-aboriginal person to set foot on the Great Divide, between the Nasaupee and George Rivers. On her return to the U.S., she published an account of her notable journey in The Bulletin of the American Geographical Society and a book entitled, A Woman's Way Through Unknown Labrador (London 1908). She also lectured on the same subject in England, the United States, and Canada.

Custodial history:

The diaries of Leonidas and Mina Hubbard and their guide George Elson were microfilmed from the originals then in the possession of Mina Benson Hubbard Ellis. The microfilm was made through the London Office of the National Archives. The original diaries have now been acquired by the Centre for Newfoundland Studies at Memorial University.
