O'Connor, John, 1824-1887 : John O'Connor, born in 1824 at Boston, Mass., immigrated to Canada in 1828. He briefly served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada in 1863 and was subsequently elected to the House of Commons in 1867. O'Connor was a member of Parliament for Essex, Ont., 1867-1873 and for Russell, Ont., 1878-1882. He first entered the Cabinet as President of the Privy Council in 1872 and later served as Minister of Inland Revenue, 1873; Postmaster General, 1873, 1880-1881; and Secretary of State, 1880-1881.

Called to the bar of Upper Canada in 1854, O'Connor was created King's Counsel in 1873. In 1884, he was commisioned Puisne Judge of the High Court of Justice in Ontario and he served in that post until his death in 1887. See: Johnson: Directory of Parliament, pp. 447-448.
