CJOH and The Ottawa Citizen present this live broadcast from Ottawa, focusing on the high cost of health care in relation to the needs of patients. Max Keeping guides a discussion on the moral, ethical and legal aspects of keeping terminally-ill patients alive. The question of cost as a factor in treatment for terminal cases is examined through a discussion of a hypothetical medical case by a panel of medical experts, interviewees, a heart transplant recipient, and the audience. The panel includes: Dr. Hugh Scully of the Ontario Medical Association; Jane Fulton, hospital administrator; and Edward Keyserlingk, professor of medical ethics. Heart patient Fred Casswell( in Regina) expresses, via television monitor, his point of view as a patient. Also through television relay, Max Keeping interviews Dr. Cal Stiller, Chief of Multi Organ Transplants at Western University Hospital in London, Ontario, who discusses his responsibility in such cases; and Norman Ellis, Under Secretary of the British Medical Association, who describes the British attitude. <60mn>
