Fonds consists of two letters from Beck to a Mr. Holmes in England, the author of a number of works on Buddhism and other spiritual subjects. The letters discuss the writing of both Beck and Holmes.

Beck, L. Adams (Lily Adams), d. 1931 : Lily Adams Beck (1862 - 3 January 1931) was a British-born novelist and nonfiction author who became the first prolific, female fantasy writer in Canada. Daughter of Royal Navy Captain John Moresby, Beck lived and traveled in Egypt, India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Burma, China, Tibet and Japan. She settled in Victoria, B.C. in 1919 "where she became known as an eccentric proponent of Oriental customs and philosophy." She wrote under various pseudonyms, depending on the genre, publishing altogether almost thirty books. As Lily Adams Beck, she wrote stories set in Asia and influenced by Asian philosophy and religion. As E. Barrington, she wrote historical romances, including "Glorious Apollo," (1925), a a best-selling fictionalized biography of Byron, and "The Thunderer" (1927), a tale of Napoleon and Josephine. The 1929 film "The Divine Lady" was based on her 1924 novel of the same name, also published under the E. Barrington pseudonym. As Louis Moresby, she wrote three nonfiction books, "The glory of Egypt" (1926), "Rubies" (1927), and "Captain Java" (1928). She married Royal Navy commander Edward Western Hodgkinson, who died around 1910 and remarried in 1912 to retired solicitor Ralph Coker Adams Beck. She was a staunch Buddhist and strict vegetarian. Beck continued to write until her death in 1931 in Kyoto, Japan.
