Nagys, Henrikas, 1920-1996 : Henrikas Nagys, born in 1920 at Mazeikiai, Lithuania, studied architecture at the University of Kaunas from 1940 to 1943, when the university was closed under German occupation. He fled Lithuania for Austria in 1944, just before the second Soviet occupation. At the University of Innsbruck and, at the University of Freiburg, he studied German Literature, obtaining his Ph.D. in 1949. That year he left for the United States.

In 1950, immigrated to Canada, settling in Montreal. Here he taught Lithuanian as a part-time teacher at the Université de Montréal. He worked as editor of the Nepriklausoma Lietuva and from the early 1970's to the present, has worked as a teacher of English in the public school system. Nagys has written poetry since childhood. His first book of poems was published in 1946. Since then he has published poems, as well as articles on literature and art in various Lithuanian exile newspapers and magazines.
