Collection consists of typed transcripts of documents relating to the history of British Columbia, Vancouver Island, Oregon and Washington. Includes correspondence, journals, reminiscences, and biographical sketches covering a wide range of subjects such as exploration, fur trade, mining, Indians, and early settlement (volumes 1-3).

Bancroft, Hubert Howe, 1832-1918 : Hubert H. Bancroft, an American historian established a large book business in 1852 in San Francisco. He devoted himself to the task of acquiring historical documents from the mid-1870s to the mid-1880s, travelling throughout the Pacific and western regions of the United States, Canada and Mexico to interview settlers and transcribe documents. His library, which he elaborately indexed, included 60,000 volumes, tracts, and manuscripts.

Bancroft, also a prolific author, published multi-volume histories of the Pacific region including his "History of the Pacific States", designed to embrace a history of Central America, Mexico and the States of the Pacific slope northward to Alaska. His collection of documents and transcripts was acquired by the University of California in 1905.
