Fonds consists of general correspondence relating to the Macmillan Company of Canada and correspondence with various Canadian authors; correspondence with Ethel Wilson; correspondence from Robert H. Blattner, an American friend from Readers' Digest; personal material; subject files; clippings and printed material.

Photographic material depicts Gray's family, hockey and army careers, and publishing career with MacMillan of Canada; photos reproduced in Gray's memoirs "Fun Tomorrow"; St. Mary's Isle, residence of the Earl of Selkirk.

Gray, John Morgan, 1907-1978 : John Morgan Gray, publisher and author, was born in Toronto and educated at Lakefield College School, Upper Canada College and the University of Toronto. From 1928-1929 Grey was free lance writing in London, playing professional hockey with the British National Hockey Team, and a teaching at Lakefield College School. After this, Gray began his publishing career with the Macmillan Company of Canada Ltd. in 1930, as an educational representative. After the war, in which Gray served with the Toronto Scottish and Canadian Intelligence Corps, he took over as managing director of Macmillan's, 1946-1955.

In 1956 he was named President and in 1969, Chairman of the Board, retiring in 1973. Gray was the author of: an adventure story,"The One-Eyed Trapper", a biography Lord Selkirk of Red River; his memoirs "Fun Tomorrow"; and other works. Throughout his career Gray received a number of honorary degrees from Canadian universities and the Order of Canada in 1975.
