Fonds consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, circulars and manuscripts relating to Rabbi Gordon's ministry in Toronto, 1915-1934; letters of condolence, telegrams, and a newspaper clipping on the death of Rabbi Gordon, November 25, 1934. Included are letters from Rabbi Samuel Cass and H.M. Caiserman. The fonds also contains a photograph of Rabbi Gordon, ca. 1904-1934.

Gordon, Jacob, 1877-1934 : Jacob Gordon, born in Danilowitz, Russia, was educated at the Rabinnical schools of Volozhin, Minsk, and Kovno. He was ordained in 1896. From 1904, when he immigrated to Toronto, until his death in 1934, he served the Jewish community as Rabbi of Beth Midrash Hagadol on McCaul St., Goel Tzedek on University Avenue, Libawetzer at Denison and Grange Sts., and Yavneh Zionist at Beverly and Cecil Sts. He was founder of the Toronto Hebrew Free School and co-founded the Hebrew National Association with Joseph Graner.

In 1919, he addressed the founding convention of the Canadian Jewish Congress (C.J.C.) in Montreal on the problem of avoiding the desecration of the Sabbath with a five day working week. He was the author of four books on Halacha. Rabbi Gordon served on the executive of the C.J.C., Ontario Region, and for many years was the doyen of the Toronto Rabbinate. He was associated with the Mizrachi Society of Toronto, the Toronto Zionist Council, and the Federation of Jewish Charities.
