Fonds consists of journals first written in 1919 and later edited and published by Professor Roy. The journals are vivid and personal descriptions of the trench warfare experienced by the 31st Battalion. Since the journals were completed after the War, he describes a battle in one locality and can relate it to other battles in the same theatre.

Fraser, Donald, 1882-1946 : Donald Fraser, born in 1882 at Edinburgh, Scotland, was educated at George Watson's College. He immigrated to Canada in 1906 and worked as a farm labourer in Manitoba, a clerk at the Merchant's Bank in Calgary and then a clerk at the Royal Trust of Vancouver. He enlisted in Calgary in 1914 and arrived in France with the Canadian Expeditionary Force, 31st Battalion, 6th Brigade. He served in France for one year as an infantry man and for one year and two months as a machine gunner. He was wounded in late 1917 at Passchendaele.

After being wounded, he returned to Calgary and was discharched from the army on 16 September 1918. He thereafter worked for the Department of National Revenue for twenty-six years.
