Fonds consists of letters written by Johnson to his family in New Brunswick. The letters cover the period from 1916 to 1918 and deal extensively with his training in England and France and his emotional health during the war. Many of the letters deal with Johnson's reminiscences of family life and his answers to questions put forward to him by his family. After he was wounded in 1917, he was hospitalized in France and England and during this period, the letters all deal with his convalescence.

Photographs are a portrait of John Merritt Johnson and of the family farm.

Johnson, John Merritt, 1878-1976 : John Merritt Johnson, soldier, was born in 1878 in Victoria County, N.B., and enlisted in the Canadian Militia in 1916. He was initially in the 140th Battalion and transferred thereafter to the Royal Canadian Rifles and then to the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. Severely wounded in 1917, Johnson was hospitalized in France and England. He was demobilized in 1918 and lived in Fredericton for the rest of his life.
